Toyota Tacoma Generations

When Toyota first introduced the Tacoma to the American market in 1995, it was a striking change from their prior truck offerings. Before the Tacoma came along, Toyota offered the "Pickup," an aptly named bare-bones truck, which offered far more utility than comfort. This new Toyota Tacoma brought some much-needed enhancements to safety, comfort, and convenience with an all-new chassis and suspension system. This much-needed update turned the Toyota pickup into a quite capable daily driver and one that has become one of the best-selling trucks in the world. Learn more about this amazing truck below, and shop by each generation of Toyota Tacoma.

1st Generation Tacoma (1995-2004)

Toyota brought the Tacoma to the American market in 1995 alongside its SUV sibling, the RAV4. The truck came standard as a two-door, rear-wheel drive model with a 2.4L inline-4 engine and either a manual or automatic transmission. Four-door models became available shortly after that, alongside available 4WD, a larger inline-4, and V6 engine options. A facelift came in 2000 as a mid-generation refresh, lasting until 2004.

2nd Generation Tacoma (2005-2015)

Arriving for the 2005 model year, the second-generation Toyota Tacoma was larger and more powerful than ever before, making it even more popular in the American market. Once again available in both single and double-cab variants, this new generation added a third option known as the Access Cab, adding rear seats and a half-door for rear passengers. This new update also added a powerful 4.0L V6 engine, making the Tacoma even more capable of hauling and towing cargo. Like the previous model, a facelift came mid-generation in 2009, with production switching over to the third generation in 2016.

3rd Generation Tacoma (2016-Present)

The third generation Tacoma brought a striking new design, looking much more aggressive and larger than before, helping it compete with larger trucks like the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado. Arriving in 2016, this update also offered comfort features like available heated seats and touchscreen multimedia displays. Newer model years even feature standard backup camera systems and Apple CarPlay functionality built-in. This latest model also bumped up power to up to 278hp with the V6, and up to 6,800lbs of towing capacity. With six trims to choose from, the third generation Toyota Tacoma was its most diverse and impressive generation yet.

Toyota Tacoma Trim Levels

To go along with three generations of Tacoma, Toyota offers a wide range of available trim levels for this popular mid-size pickup truck. From the entry-level Tacoma SR to the ultimate off-roader Tacoma TRD Pro, we've detailed some of the most popular trim levels for the Toyota Tacoma. Check out the trim levels below, then shop for your perfect used Toyota Tacoma right here at AutoNation USA.

Toyota Tacoma SR

The Tacoma SR is the base trim level, available in both 4WD and 2WD variants. This entry-level variant features steel wheels, cloth seats, and typically a four-cylinder engine. On newer model years, you find features like standard backup cameras and Apple CarPlay, as well as improved safety features such as Toyota Safety Sense, first introduced in the second generation.

Toyota Tacoma SR5

The Tacoma SR5 is a quick step up from the base SR trim level but improves on some interior features for a more enjoyable driving experience. Expect to find adjustable front seats, keyless entry systems, leather steering wheels, and larger screens on newer models such as the third-generation Toyota Tacoma.

Toyota Tacoma Limited

The Tacoma Limited is one of the best options for those interested in an on-road driving experience, compared to the off-road-oriented TRD trims. The Limited trim adds leather seating surfaces, upgraded wheels and tires, premium audio systems, and high-end tech like Dynamic Cruise Control and 360-degree cameras on newer models.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road

For those looking to explore off the beaten path, consider a Tacoma TRD Off-Road. This trim level gives buyers off-road capability in an affordable and comfortable package. Expect to find improved locking differentials, larger off-road tires, and more. Newer models even feature Crawl Control and drive modes for alternate terrain.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

If the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road isn't enough, look no further than the TRD Pro. This top-of-the-line truck expands on the TRD Off-Road, adding upgraded suspension, skid plates, exclusive TRD Pro badging, and off-road wheels. Some of the latest models feature off-road cameras for enhanced monitoring and confidence when exploring rough terrain.
