Popular Toyota RAV4 Generations

Named for its capability and four-wheel drive, the Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive (RAV4) was an instant hit with consumers when it released for the 1995 model year. Building a vehicle with SUV capability in a compact, car-like package was a relatively new concept, but ultimately won over consumers. With five distinct generations to choose from, we've highlighted some of the key differences and features, which you can browse and shop for here at AutoNation USA.

2nd Generation RAV4 (2001-2005)

When the second generation of RAV4 debuted for the 2001 model year, it had seen significant changes both inside and out. Once again available in both two and four-door variants, and similar powertrain options, the second generation was more of a refresh than a revolution. This new model added standard airbags, followed by standard Vehicle Stability Control in 2003, making the RAV4 safer than ever.

3rd Generation RAV4 (2006-2012)

The third generation RAV4 did away with the former two-door variants, making it exclusively available with four doors, a trend that continues to this day. With revised exterior panels and an upgraded interior, this third generation was a much welcome refresh to the platform. This would also be the first RAV4 to be offered with a V6 engine, offering more power and torque than the standard four-cylinder.

4th Generation RAV4 (2013-2018)

Arriving for the 2013 model year, the fourth generation RAV4 was perhaps the most drastic exterior redesign, making for a much sleeker and aerodynamic crossover. This new variant also introduced a new liftgate, and the V6 engine was replaced with a gas-hybrid variant. All RAV4 models would once again be powered by a four-cylinder. A mid-cycle refresh brought a facelift for the 2016 model year.

5th Generation RAV4 (2019-Present)

One of the most recent updates to the Toyota RAV4 platform came for the 2019 model year with the fifth generation RAV4, adding a suite of standard safety features, four hybrid variants, standard backup cameras, Apple CarPlay, and a revised look inside and out. This would also be the first RAV4 to be offered with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, known as the Toyota RAV4 PHEV.

Toyota RAV4 Trim Levels

To go along with five generations of RAV4, Toyota offers a wide range of available trim levels for this popular crossover SUV. From the entry-level RAV4 LE to the top-of-the-line RAV4 Limited, we outline some of the most popular trim levels for the Toyota RAV4. Check out the trim levels below, then shop for your perfect used Toyota RAV4.

Toyota RAV4 LE

The RAV4 LE is the base trim level, available in both 4WD and 2WD variants. Expect to find an efficient 4-cylinder engine, front-wheel drive, automatic transmission, and airbags as standard safety equipment. On newer model years you find features like standard backup cameras and Apple CarPlay, as well as improved safety features.

Toyota RAV4 XLE

The RAV4 XLE is the next step up from the base model LE, and adds a suite of comfort and convenience upgrades. Expect to find upgrades such as larger wheels, improved sound systems, keyless entry, power-adjustable wheels, and on newer models dual-zone climate control.

Toyota RAV4 Limited

For those looking for more luxury features than a standard crossover SUV, consider a used Toyota RAV4 Limited. This is the top-of-the-line trim level and in addition to standard XLE features, you can often find upgraded seats (which are heated), ambient interior lighting, high-end audio, standard navigation, and on some newer models an automated parking assist.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

In addition to its many trim levels, the RAV4 is also available in a hybrid variant. This was first made available with the fourth generation RAV4, and now comes in standard and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants. If you're looking to save at the pump, but not sacrifice power, consider one of the latest Toyota RAV4 Hybrid models for sale at AutoNation USA.
