Popular Ford Mustang Generations

First unveiled at the 1964 New York World's Fair, the Ford Mustang was an instant hit with the general public. Built as a relatively small, but capable coupe, it sat four comfortably and had a spacious trunk, too. The Mustang has remained popular ever since, and has been in constant production since 1964, making it one of the longest-produced cars on the road. Modern versions feature high-end tech, advanced safety features, powerful engines, and are even available in electric variants. Below we've called out some of the most popular Ford Mustang generations, all of which you can shop for today at AutoNation USA.

4th Generation Mustang (1994-2004)

The fourth generation Ford Mustang featured a drastic redesign, one that is instantly recognizable amongst many drivers on the road today. Featuring a vintage-styled body with callbacks to the first Mustang, this sleek new design was an instant hit. A V6 engine was standard, with the larger V8 available in GT trims. In 1999 a facelift brought the car in-line with its other Ford vehicles, featuring sharper lines and 1965-inspired side scoops.

5th Generation Mustang (2005-2014)

The fifth generation Mustang expanded on the retro-inspired design of the fourth generation models, and took it to an entirely new level. Pulling inspiration from the legendary "fastback" Mustangs of the 1960's, this new body was incredibly popular amongst consumers. Engines were revised, with the base V6 now producing over 300 horsepower, and GT models more than 400 with their powerful V8s. This generation also saw the return of the Shelby Mustang, which featured an earth-shaking 662 horsepower V8 engine.

6th Generation Mustang (2015-Present)

Arriving for the 2015 model year, the sixth and most recent generation Mustang saw another drastic redesign, this time with a sharper and more muscular exterior. The base engine option was switched to an EcoBoost four-cylinder, a first for the Mustang. Modern suspension designs helped improved handling, and safety upgrades earned the Mustang 5-star ratings from the NHTSA, all while maintaining the Mustang's iconic look and feel. Later models featured modern tech like Apple CarPlay and standard backup cameras, too.

Mustang Mach-E (2021-Present)

One of the most drastic and modern changes to the Mustang came for the 2021 model year with the Mustang Mach-E. This offshoot of the Mustang is an all-electric vehicle, a first for the Mustang brand and one of Ford's first mass-produced EVs. Built as a compact crossover SUV, the Mustang Mach-E has become incredibly popular amongst consumers, thanks to its cutting-edge tech and impressive battery range, up to 300 miles* in certain trim levels. Despite its SUV looks, some models can accelerate up to 60mph in just 3.5 seconds, faster than most sports cars!
