Ford Escape Generations

Built at a time when full-size, truck-based SUVs reigned supreme, the Ford Escape offered car-like sizing and handling, with SUV comfort and capability, and above all else increased fuel economy. With four distinct generations to choose from, and even a hybrid variant, we've highlighted some of the key differences and features on the Ford Escape, which you can shop for today at AutoNation USA.

2nd Generation Escape (2008-2012)

The second generation Ford Escape saw relatively mild changes to the exterior, but featured an all-new interior, along with improved engine and transmission options, all of which increased efficiency over the previous generation. Safety upgrades like electronic stability control became standard, with later model years seeing optional extras like park assist and backup cameras.

3rd Generation Escape (2013-2019)

The third generation Escape brought a new, more aerodynamic body shape, a sharp change from the relatively boxy second generation model. This change was so drastic it improved aerodynamics by 10%, making the Ford Escape more fuel efficient at higher speeds. This was also the first generation of Ford Escape to feature a hands-free liftgate, available as an optional extra.

4th Generation Escape (2020-Present)

Arriving for the 2020 model year, the fourth and most recent generation Escape has been completely redesigned, featuring a sleek, even more aerodynamic appearance. The base engine option is now an EcoBoost three-cylinder, making an impressive 180hp despite its small displacement. Safety features have also been improved, with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision avoidance, and lane-keeping assist all being standard equipment on fourth-generation Escape SUVs.

Ford Escape Trim Levels

In addition to now four generations of Ford Escape, and over 20 years of production, there are a variety of popular trim levels to choose from. The entry-level Escape S is a great option for those seeking an affordable daily driver with the basics, or you can choose a fully-loaded Titanium Hybrid, offering maximum comfort and convenience, plus some pretty impressive fuel economy! Learn more below and shop by trim level for your perfect used Ford Escape.

Ford Escape S

The Ford Escape S is the base trim level, available in both AWD and 2WD variants. Expect to find an efficient 4-cylinder engine on later models, and a turbo 3-cylinder with newer ones. Cloth seats, base level audio, and manual HVAC controls are standard equipment. On newer model years you find features like standard backup cameras and Apple CarPlay, as well as improved safety features.

Ford Escape SE

The Escape SE is the next step up from the base model S, and adds a number of upgrades. Expect to find power-adjustable driver seat, keyless entry, automatic climate control, improved audio and multimedia systems, and more. Engine options remain unchanged, with automatic transmissions still standard.

Ford Escape SEL

The Ford Escape SEL expands on the already well-equipped SE, adding improved seat materials, heated seats, remote start, larger multimedia screens, and hands-free liftgate on select model years. This trim also offers additional, larger engine options over the S and SE models.

Ford Escape Titanium

For those wanting the best-equipped Ford Escape, consider the top-of-the-line Titanium trim. This variant features all of the best from the SEL and adds on larger alloy wheels, powered driver and passenger seats with leather trim, premium audio, parking assist systems, dual-zone climate control, and available hybrid drivetrains.
