What Is All-Wheel Drive?

All-wheel drive, also known as AWD, is a driveline system designed to maximize traction by powering all four wheels simultaneously. This system also comes in two variants, part-time AWD and full-time AWD. Part-time systems often operate in front-wheel drive until the vehicle computer detects a need for additional traction, which can then automatically power the rear wheels. Full-time AWD powers all four wheels all the time, offering maximum traction in all driving conditions.

AWD vs 4WD

Although all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive sound like the same thing, they are two very different driveline systems. Whereas all-wheel drive provides constant power to the wheels, four-wheel drive systems feature high and low-range options and are usually designed for off-road utility. These 4WD systems most often operate in rear-wheel drive mode until 4WD mode or 4x4 is selected by the driver through mechanical controls or the vehicle's onboard computer. AWD is much more common in cars and SUVs, while 4WD can be found on trucks and off-road SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Landcruiser, and Ford Bronco.

Which Cars Have All-Wheel Drive?

All-wheel drive was first mass-produced by Subaru in the 1970s, and is now a core part of their vehicle lineup. Audi was another pioneer of the technology, with their Audi Quattro systems providing incredible performance in nearly all road conditions. Today, all-wheel drive is one of the most popular driveline options on the market, appearing on more vehicles and brands than ever before, including many electric and hybrid vehicles.

Some of the best-selling vehicles with all-wheel drive include the Audi A6, Honda CR-V, Subaru Outback, and the Toyota RAV4.
